WINTER: Southern California Style

This week’s theme for our #52SnapShots #PBSG Photo Challenge (sponsored by our friends at The Lazy PitBull) is WINTER! We imagine we’ll see lots of beautiful snow filled photos – especially from folks back on the east coast. But winter in California is upside down from what you typically think of as winter scenery. Once the rains come, everything starts to turn green, the wildflowers by the side of the road start to blossom and the silk floss tree in our front yard blooms.

We thought we would share some of these atypical winter scenes with you for the photo challenge. Don’t be jealous – the downside of this is that by summer, the drought takes over and all of this beautiful bright green turns brown and stays brown until the rains come again in the fall.

  1. It’s so pretty there!!
I’ve never cared much for lots of snow! It’s pretty to look at for a little while (as long as you don’t have anywhere to be) but then it turns into a huge pain. LOL

  2. ok, I try not to look as green as your grass with envy :o) but I’m a fan of your winter, that’s for sure. Rain? I thought it never rains in southern california…. seems that Albert Hammond wasn’t right with his song :o)

    • It doesn’t rain very much…we can go from June to November without rain. But that’s why everything turns brown 🙁

  8. Sometimes when I walk outside in the winter I have to remind myself I choose to live here. Why I don’t choose to live in Southern Cali? I’m not sure…

  9. That’s a very pretty winter you have there. A lot more color than New Jersey’s browns, greys and whites!

  12. Can I say “I hate you” – I mean, I am sitting here staring at your photos almost in tears that I am not there. It is so freaking cold over here, I’ve been chilly since I walked Harley this morning. I don’t do cold – I was meant to be where you are (can you hear me crying?) Those photos are breathtaking, thanks so much for sharing. P.S. I don’t hate you – a strong dislike right now? – yeah! 🙂

  13. We’re in a weird in-between winter state where it’s not totally barren but definitely not SoCal either! Thanks to all the rain, the greenery is pretty lush year round.

  20. Very beautiful photos! I have to be a little jealous of the warmer weather. There are some benefits to having a frigid winter though – all of the bugs die for a few months.

  22. Those sure are unique “winter” photos! I lived in northern california a long time ago, and it just seemed wrong to me to have so much green in the middle of winter! But, it was fun, and beautiful, as you showed us!
