senior petsThis month has been designated Senior Pet Month by BlogPaws. They created a great Infographic to help bring attention to the health concerns of seniors as well as the benefits of seniors – they provided some statistics on seniors too. Did you know that 84% of those surveyed believe senior pets should eat differently? And they are right, it’s likely their metabolism and exercise levels have lowered and they need fewer calories. Since we have seniors we know the joys and the pain believe me. We wrote a piece published in a few weeks ago where we outline ways to care for your senior dog – some great additional insights in the comments. Check it Out.

Next Thursday is a big day – it’s the first day of BarkWorld. What’s BarkWorld you ask? It’s a big national Pet Social Media Conference & Event and is being held in BarkWorldAtlanta, GA from August 22nd to 24th. There are all sorts of educational sessions and speeches and roundtable discussions. SlimDoggy is going to be involved in two of them:

  1. Friday at 10:30 am: My Dog Ate What? How to Correctly Read Dog Food Labels Yep, one of our favorite topics! Plan on learning lots about dog food labels and what they really mean!
  2. Saturday at 10:15: Roundtable: From Idea to the App Store: Got a great idea for an App? How do you get it from your head into the App Store – come join the discussion.

If you are going to BarkWorld, we hope you come by our sessions and join in, or at least say hello!

And finally, we reported a few months ago on the new crop of peppers growing at the end of our street. We’ve been watching it grow and grow and wanted to provide an update. The first frame is a picture of the seedlings from our first post so you could compare. The close-up shows the little white flowers that turn into the peppers. Jack is pleased with his bacon crop (no, I haven’t told him yet that it’s not bacon.)

We’re joining up with 2 Brown Dawgs for This ‘N That Thursday Blog Hop!

  1. Thanks so much for participating in TNT!

Excellent article on senior pets. The reason we are retiring Thunder from testing is because he is a senior. He won’t finish his MH title this year and next year he will be 8. He is in good shape, but at 8 and being a big, hard charging dog, why push it. The chance for injury just seems to outweigh our desire to title him. If he was Storm’s size, we would probably keep running him. πŸ™‚

Your Barkworld presentation sounds like it is going to be interesting. Looks like the crops are coming along. The corn in the fields where we train have grown huge overnight.

    • Probably a good decision about Thunder – you are right why push it – keep him strong. Injuries in senior are terrible – they have enough problems!

  3. Katie retired from running at nine because of her arthritis and because she always hated it anyway. She is a food monster and loves to eat but no so much her food, rather snacks πŸ™‚ Mom says older humans always complain about too much food so it must be the same for dogs. Since Katie is still pretty active she can have a few extra snacks without gaining weight. Have a great time at BarkWorld. We won’t be there but we will be hitting Vegas in May.

        • I read your comment too quickly – I thought it was you’d be the one with the tie-dyed t-shirt OR the woman with Cody…I was a little worried about a kitty being there with all those Barkers.

  5. Wow, look at those pepper plants, they have come a long way! I have pepper plants, but they don’t look like that. Of course, they might if I lived in sunny California! πŸ™‚ We’ll get a few peppers though, if we can keep summer going a little longer.
Have a great time at BarkWorld! Wish I was going, it sounds like fun.

    • I know, they are beautiful – rows and rows of them. The best those are the fields down the road that grow flowers. I should go take some pictures of them.
