Super Food at SuperZoo

szoo-logoThis week, we were in Las Vegas at SuperZoo, one of the Pet industry’s biggest trade shows.  There were close to 6,000 exhibitor booths, taking up the entire North Mandalay Bay Convention Center.  We taped a video segment  on with Robert Semrow which will be airing in a few months.  Robert and his crew did an amazing job and worked very hard to make the conference feel like ‘an event’. There was a great vibe here and we were able to meet with some very interesting  companies.

We spent a lot of our time visiting the dog food booths and were very pleased to chat with the folks at Natures Variety, PetCurean, The Honest Kitchen, Merrick, and some of the other established brands.

We were also able to visit with some lesser known (at least to us) and newer food brands and learn about their products.  Based on the ingredients and formulations that  it seems like the dog food industry, with the help of the newcomers and up and comers, is evolving in a positive direction.

Rising Stars?

If the newer food brands are any indication, there appears to be a movement in the dog food industry to more quality and less processed and artificial ingredients.  Below are the names of some that we spoke with.  We will be doing some research on these brands and adding their foods into our database.  In the meantime, we are curious to know if you have  heard of, or do you use these brands?  Any other up-and-coming food brands that we should know of?

    • There were only a few bloggers (that I know) here at SuperZoo. The event is really meant for product companies to meet with retailers to show them their product lines and new products. I hear that special discounts are offered and lots of orders / proposals are taken at the show. Sort of like the advertising “upfront” market in some respects I suppose.

      • I know they are more like a trade shows but it would be fun to go just to see what products and things are out there. I know there are a couple big ones around but none in my area.

  4. Nope. Dakota eats Nutrish, Cody currently eats Royal Canin Veterinary Rabbit for cats but is probably changing to Natural Balance.

  6. I have never heard of any of those brands. But that is great news that you think the pet food industry is evolving in a positive direction. It’s also great that your database keeps growing!

  7. Do you run numbers on treats, or just food? My boss tells me that the bones and bully sticks are low in fat. Of course, you know I’m partial to Jones Natural Chews. 🙂 Did you say hi to Suzy while at SuperZoo?

    • Just foods but we can and will run them on treats. Treats will have far less ingredients although I wonder what the average number will be?

      • And no, we missed Suzy at SuperZoo, although we saw a lot of people walking around with boxes of Jones Chews!

  8. I eat Primal Pet Food!! It gets one of the highest ratings at Dog Food Advisor because of the protein, fat and carb ratios as well as the use of organic ingredients! I love it!
