Mischief…that’s the theme for this week’s #52Snapshots #PBSG photo challenge. Today is also Mischief Monday, so a perfect time for a mischief post.

But instead of some story about Jack getting into the trash, or Maggie running off with some avocados, I have a mischief story of a different sort.

Most every night we play a game of ‘find the food’ with Jack and Maggie. We’ve talked about it before – we hide little Zuke’s treats around the front yard and they go off running around the yard trying to find the treats. It’s a fun game, gives them a little extra cardio exercise and some always needed mental exercise.

Tonight, we scattered the treats as we usually do, returned to the house to let Jack and Maggie go and noticed we had some interlopers stealing their treats.

We have a lot of black crows that live in our neighborhood. They usually don’t bother us and Jack and Maggie ignore them, although sometimes they gather on the trees or power lines around our house and I feel like I’m in that playground scene from “The Birds“. Only three were hanging around today, but sometimes there’s too many to count.

They got theirs later with a terrible thunder and lightening storm which we rarely get in SoCal. But when it does rain it pours as you can see.

Then we got the added treat of hail. I almost felt like I was back east.

And to top it off, we lost power for almost 6 hours. Jack and Maggie were not phased. Maggie climbed in her bed in front of the fireplace and slept through everything. Jack climbed on top of Steve and me and took a nap.

Lots of Mother Nature mischief around our house this weekend.

  1. How rude of those birds! Bailie has had other dogs steal her article on her track before. Just awful, but birds and hail, bad mischief! I will keep my cold and snow for now.

  5. If the crows start talking to each other, every single crow in a 10 mile radius will want to visit your place for vacation.

  6. You sure had some extreme weather. Hope you’re all ok xx

  7. LOL “Jack getting into the trash, or Maggie running off with some avocados” plus those mean birds, that is alot of mischief for one day.

  8. You are so right, those birds can be creepy and remind me of the movie The Birds. Shudder! Makes me want to go searching for a treat now just to show them whose yard it is anyway! 🙂

  9. I\\\’m glad I\\\’m not the only one who remembers that Alfred Hitchcock movie!! Every time I see the birds around here — usually grackles — sitting on the power lines I think of that scene! It makes me laugh that the movie used to scare the bejeepers out of me.

  10. Ha – seems like the crows enjoy the game of Find the Food too! Maybe it can now be called Find the Food Before the Crows! That would be slightly creepy to have more than a few hanging around. We have vultures that hang out on top of light poles along this one street here. It’s not so bad driving by, but I’d be a little nervous if I were walking that street.

We’ve had rain too – but no hail.

  13. Oh no, I hope those crows don’t make a habit of stealing their treats! I know how much they love the “find it” game outside. What a day!

  14. Well if you’re getting hail I can unpack our suitcases! Harley and I were headed your way (since you keep inviting us!) to wait out this blizzard like weather here on the East Coast. LOL So what’s up with the birds?

  15. Holy cow that’s some hail, almost looks like your in WI with some snow.

  17. Oh, man – Rita hates crows enough as it is, but if they were stealing her treats on top of just being annoying, swaggering loud-mouths, well, she’d probably just completely lose it! We had weather mischief here too, but no hail!

  19. Birds are not safe in my back yard I would have chased them so fast! Sounds like Jack and Maggie aren’t afraid of storms that’s good. We could never hide food outside, rats, squirrels, coyotes. Did you know I live in the city? Love Dolly
