SlimDoggy Mischief

We didn’t have much mischief to write about last month while we were doing the A to Z Challenge. We tried to tie each post to something mischievous, but that didn’t always work out. Today, we finally have a little bit of mischief to share.
A few weeks ago, we did a photo shoot for a news segment on wearable pet technology. One of the shots the filmmaker wanted was Jack playing fetch. Well, even though he is a retriever, Jack doesn’t play fetch. Well, I should amend that, Jack plays his own version of fetch which is a little different.playing w Jack2
He’ll stand there and act like he wants nothing more than to chase that toy grab it and bring it back to you, just like any normal retriever would. But Jack has no interest in bringing it back to you, nor does he want to turn it into a game of chase which many dogs like to do.
No, Jack runs, grabs whatever it is you’ve tossed and then runs back into the house, into his bed with the toy.
Joe, the guy doing the filming got himself all set up to film Jack running to fetch the toy and coming back to Steve, even though we warned him he probably wouldn’t do that. And sure enough – he grabs the toy and runs right by us and into the house with his toy. Where he proceeds to chew it up. That’s his idea of fetch.

Joe filmed it anyways, but it’s probably not the story they wanted to tell. Some retriever you are Jack!

  1. I have three dogs; only one plays fetch enthusiastically. The other two will do it if bribed appropriately with treats.

  2. I have said that Teach (Smooth Collie) is a far better retriever than my Lab ever was!! Its great that Jack did just as you suspected him to do … contrary to what the cameraman wanted!! Way to be an individual, Jack!

  7. As much as he loves to run, I’m surprised at his lack of enthusiasm….

    • Oh, he runs – he just runs back into the house. He’s goofy, what can I say.

  8. Haha! He’s still a retriever – just a self-serving one!
That’s okay – that’s what Moses does, too, for the most part. But he won’t even return in your general direction to give you false hope – sometimes he’ll take the toy further away to lie down and chew on it.

  9. He fulfilled his duty as a retriever, but no where in the name does it claim he’s a give-it-backer. I love how pleased with himself he is.

    • You know, your right, he did fetch it and take it home.

That said … Prince is never allowed to play with him. Haha, only kidding and have a wonderful Cinco de Mayo!

  19. Way too funny! My golden retriever is a lot like this. I’ll throw here a chew toy and instead of “retrieving” and bringing it back she’ll just go to her bead very content and chew for a while. Really enjoyed your post, especially the pix. Thanks a lot!

  22. He caught it, it’s his! 🙂 Makes perfect sense. Cookie likes playing but sooner or later wants to do the same thing – lay down with the toy and chew it up.

  23. I love it….too funny. Many retrievers have their own version of the game. Our golden Moses would never bring it back either….he let his sisters do that. If he got a chance to catch the ball, he just passed it off to them!
