SlimDoggy Hikes to Paradise Falls

We’re doing something a little different for FitDog Friday today since we’ve had so many fitness posts during the A to Z Challenge. Jack and Maggie are taking over and presenting a review of their latest hike up to Paradise Falls near our home. Take it away Jack…

Our story is about a hike we took one day last week to Paradise Falls. A really cool place near our house in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains. We started out slowly, because Maggie is a slowpoke. I just as soon run, run, run, but Maggie likes to sniff and sniff and sniff. Here’s Maggie catching up.

hikephoto102That’s not to say I don’t stop and sniff as well, of course I do, but it has to be particularly tantalizing when I’m on a trail run like this – take this tree for instance, I think a coyote went by here not long ago and I must investigate.

hikephoto110This is a really fun run for a number of reasons. First, it’s in the woods, so that’s always exciting. Second, there’s water – yes, we do have some water here in California, usually only in the springtime, but this trail has little streams and bridges for us to run over. Maggie likes to take shortcuts through the water sometimes.

hikecollageWe run and run for a long time and then finally, we get to the top and we get to see this – Paradise Falls! Pretty cool huh!

hikecollage2But the  absolute best part of this run is that dad lets me go off leash as long as I behave myself, so I get to sniff and run and wander to my hearts content and I don’t have to turn around and go get Maggie.

hikephoto122Maggie, being the pesky little sister, just has to follow me wherever I go.

hikephoto123It’s a great run with lots of fun things for us to do and it’s also great exercise because it’s uphill and down, jumping over streams and climbing over rocks – it’s a mini-obstacle course.

Finally, here’s Maggie pointing the way home.

  1. What an incredible day you two had. Never been to Santa Monica, but feel like we get to visit vicariously through your family. Thanks so much for that. Once Leo saw those inviting streams – it would have been all over. He would have jumped in and started doing his own thing.

  5. What a beautiful place to run! I bet there are lots of wabbits there too! I don’t get to go off leash unless an area is fenced as I take off tracking. Good job and nice run!

    • You would have been long gone then Emma – lots of wabbits…but coyotes too, so you’d have to be careful!

  13. My pack would LOVE Paradise Falls… Although, to be honest, they might not make it all the way to the top–not without some serious breath-catching in between 😀 Gotta work on that, I know. How cool that you have these fantastic places to take the dogs. Thanks for sharing the pics, too–and for visiting over at Life In Dogs . So glad you rescued Maggie and gave her a safe home. She looks beautiful 🙂

  15. Lovely hike. There’s a great trail with tons of waterfalls about an hour away but we haven’t been because they don’t allow dogs. Too steep, I think?

  16. Wow, what a beautiful hike! It looks like so much fun too. Petal recently went on her very first hike and she enjoyed some off leash freedom too until she got a little too wild and crazy. 😉
