SlimDoggy Family Mischief

We’re back with a little SlimDoggy family mischief. I’ve written about my sister’s dog Taj (a weimaraner)  in the past here, here and here. Poor Taj has been battling frequent bouts of pneumonia that they can’t seem to get to the bottom of. Last week she had an endoscopy (just like Jack) to see if they could uncover anything. Fortunately no evidence of any physical abnormality, but the doctor did extract pieces of her favorite delicacy fro her tummy – sticks and barks, and lots of it.
I think she is giving Leroy from My Brown Newfies a run for his money and they both have pica (the persistent eating of substances such as dirt or paint that have no nutritional value). It’s usually in kids, but certainly evident in dogs!

One of the Vet’s theories is that she’s been eating this bark, barfing it back up which is irritating her throat, causing her to create more phlegm and mucus which she then aspirates…and causes pneumonia.

You may remember one of Taj’s New Years Resolutions was to stop eating bark…wonder how that’s working out?
UPDATE: Other tests on Taj showed a raging bacterial infection that the antibiotics they have been giving her just haven’t completely killed. They are culturing a sample taken during the endoscopy and hopefully they will be able to identify the bacteria and then prescribe the proper antibiotics to get rid of it. Then we work on the pica.

We are joining up with the Monday Mischief Blog Hop, hosted by Snoopy’s Dog Blog, Alfie’s Blog and My Brown Newfies

  1. Poor Taj. I know eating sticks and bark can make real problems for doggies. I hope the new antibiotics work!

  2. Scary stuff! We have to really watch Bailie as she likes to eat everything she can find. She ate the stuffing from a toy one day and pooped white fluff the entire next day, the she ate some branches and pooped those out. We are thrilled it seems to be coming back out, but Mom prefers it doesn’t even go in in the first place. It is hard to break the habit. Hope Taj will be okay and not end up like Leroy!

  3. Hi Y’all!

Poor, poor Taj. Now I know why my Human rushes up hollering at me the moment I spend more than a half second sniffin’ in one spot!

    Y’all come by now,

    • Yep – that stuff, while interesting can cause some real problems!

  4. Poor thing. I hope they get the infection under control. And how do you reason with a dog about not eating weird stuff?

    • I don’t know – but if you find out, please tell me!

  5. I never knew what pica was ….. Clearly Taj (yep-she’s my girl) has it ….. She has been doing this since she was a puppy – i yi yi ! Thankfully, her biggest vice is Kleenex ! Hoping she’s on the mend – she has to feel better with all this garbage out of her belly right ? Hoping to hear from the vet today, and hoping it shows a bacterial infection that’s treatable with antibiotics ! Taj is so appreciative of all the love and good wishes – definitely working their magic !

  6. WHAT THE DOODLE? Leo did a magic trick once with a sweat sock, that in itself was scary enough. Poor Taj, there is nothing worse than a pup not feeling their best. Harley & Leo send barks, licks and paw hugs her way. Keep us posted Slim.

    • Did he eat it? That can be so scary…wow.

      • Ate it Slim, and carried it around for 9 days. Then out of the blue – threw it up (projectile version) across the bedroom floor. Nasty, ugh! Needless to say, we pick up our socks now!!!

  9. Poor Taj! I can certainly feel for her and her family! This pica is not an easy thing to deal with and it leads to other serious issues! I hope they are able to get her infection under control. We have had a hell of a time getting Leroy’s UTI under control after his surgery and now it seems like he hurt his neck! One thing after another!

So many people don’t know about pica, so thank for sharing Taj’s story and getting the word out there!

  11. Poor Taj! My dog Jasper kept eating crab apples when he was younger. These induced–how do I say this delicately?–severe gastrointestinal consequences. That goodness he stopped that habit., As for bark, I’d say, “Say it, don’t eat it!”

  12. I knew there was an advantage to having dogs that are picky eaters. They give their treats a long sniff test before eating them.

  14. Aww, hope you feel better soon! Luckily none of our dogs actually ingest bark or sticks, but they think chewing on them is fun. Our Pyr mix sure likes to eat Kleenexes though, but luckily there’s not as much potential damage from that… Good luck with fixing the infection and the pica, it’s not always easy for sure!

  15. Hope she gets better soon. Onyxx eats weird things too. I’ve found Mr. N’s hair in his mouth THREE times!

  16. Awww! Poor thing! I hope they can get the infection under control soon!

  17. Poor Taj! It is so difficult to break a dog of that behavior. I wish Taj & lovable Leroy luck. I hope he gets the right medicine to kill off the nasty bacteria!
