SlimDoggy Dog Food Database

BlogtheChangeToday is another “Blog the Change for Animals” day, a special event sponsored by Be The Change 4 Animals. It’s a day when pet bloggers & pet lovers come together and blog about their favorite animal-related cause in an effort to raise awareness and understanding.

In the past we’ve written about two of our interests, pet obesity awareness and support for senior pets.  Today I wanted to focus on our efforts to provide useful information to educate pet owners about the contents and quality of their pet’s food.

If you read SlimDoggy, you know that every Tuesday we write about pet food ingredients or something related to pet food. We are currently on our second trip through the alphabet identifying an ingredient commonly found in your pets food and examining why it’s there, is it needed, is it potentially harmful or truly beneficial? We examine ALL of the ingredients, not just the first few because it’s that stuff at the bottom of the list that you can’t read that is usually most harmful.

We’ve built a database of dog foods that covers over 3,000 pet foods and treats. You can search the database by brand, by name or by ingredient. This is really useful if your dog has some type of food allergy or sensitivity. You can ensure that the food you are going to buy doesn’t contain that ingredient. Here’s a screen shot of the food record for Spring Naturals Salmon dry food.

Why are we writing about this today? What does this have to do with Be the Change for Animals? Well, we’re passionate about the importance of feeding your pets a healthy diet and shocked at the lack of centralized information to educate consumers. We know that that there is a direct correlation between what and how much you put into your dog’s mouth and how long they will live and how healthy they will be. By providing pet owners with information and the data on their pet’s food, we believe that we can help all dogs live the longest and healthiest life possible. It’s that simple.

In the very near future, we will be publishing an updated data set with even more foods, along with a new and improved food evaluation and ranking system.  We will also soon be publishing a similar tool for cat food on our sister site, SlimKitty.com.

We believe the old expression “you are what you eat” applies to you and to your pet! Let’s help CHANGE how we think about our pet’s nutrition, read the BlogtheChangelabels, be educated consumers.

  8. Having literally cured many of my own ailments with diet changes decades ago, I love that you help to spread the word about the importance of diet and nutrition in the health and longevity if our dogs. I have been an obsessive label reader for as long as I have been spending my own money on human and pet food and databases like yours help with translating the label and making the best possible nutrition choices for our best friends!

  12. We adopted our dog a year ago and he was nearly obese at the time. In the past year we’ve helped him slim down a lot. I feel so good about eliminating some of the serious health risks he was facing. Thanks to your site and a few others, I realized the importance of helping him lose weight.

  13. It has to be a challenge to keep you data base current since some brands seem to reformulate every year. It is a very helpful database.

  14. I totally agree about how important this is! So many people out there still don’t realize how important the food they give to their dogs is, and they put trust in companies that maybe they shouldn’t. It’s great to have a place to refer people to find all the information they need to make a better choice.
