Running with Dogs | Runner’s World

Peter Sagal, a Runner’s World contributor wrote this really cool piece on running with dogs.  Check it out here:

Running with Dogs | Runner’s World

This piece really resonated with us for several reasons:

1- We love to run and run with our dogs

2- We believe, as  K9 Fit Club, Peggy Frezon, and many others do that dogs an provide great motivation and companionship for people who want to get fit and healthy.

3- We believe that a well exercised dog is a well behaved dog.

4- Slimdoggy has been offering similar services (at no charge)  to local dog rescues in order to help foster families better deal with  dogs with high energy and/or who are overweight, which in turn can result in a higher likelihood that the fostered dog will be adopted more quickly.

In fact, we are in the middle of a series of posts describing our experiences with two foster dogs, Danny and Angel.  You can read these here.

Here is an excerpt from the runnersworld article (italics are mine).

It had been three decades since I had run with a dog, and I had forgotten how much fun it is. A dog’s pure pleasure in running is infectious, far more like play than exercise, and I soon began imagining that we were partners from the Paleolithic, man and his ancient companion, searching the veldt for prey—a happy fantasy helped along by Wombat’s habit of trying to chase down every goose he saw.

See?  Running can be fun!  So for those who need any extra motivation, take Mr. Sagal’s advice.  As we like to say… “Get off your butt, workout with your mutt!”

Share your stories about running with your dog and how it helped you get in shape or train for a race, etc.

    • Thanks Sugar. Glad to hear that life in the city/cold weather will not stop you from getting your daily exercise in. Good for you. All of us, both canine and human, need to exercise every day. Life is movement!

  2. Just had our boys out for a 10km trail run this morning, had a fantastic time. So much more fun sharing a run with an enthusiastic dog 🙂
