Rule Breakers and Rule Followers

Can you guess which category Jack & Maggie fall into? It’s not what you would think.
Jack is absolutely a rule follower. He knows the rules and follows them to the letter. I think he’s worried he’s going to get tossed into the street again – which we could never do of course. When we first got Jack, on the first night I let him sleep out of his crate, he climbed up on the sofa. I gave him a look, told him to get down and he has never been up there again, never. Even if I invite him up, he won’t go. It’s a rule, and he’s not breaking it.
Maggie hasn’t quite grokked the concept of rules yet and because of her fearfulness, we are less strict with her on most things – but she rarely does anything wrong, so there’s not a lot of rules that need to be kept – her fear keeps her pretty inhibited and she stays within the lines most of the time.
You may remember earlier this year, I told a Mischief Monday tale of Jack sneaking out the dog door when we were playing ‘find the food’ in the backyard. He figured out he could leave the door to the back deck where he was watching me hide the treats and go down the hall and out the dog door into the backyard. All I needed to do was put him back in the house and when he poked his nose out the dog door again, I said “NO” and back inside he went and has never tried to sneak out again. See, rule follower. Maggie of course, never even used the dog door until recently, so it was never a problem with her.
Until the other day…our Magic Maggie, as we are now calling her, has found her rebel streak. I was outside hiding the treats around the back yard for the evening’s game, when all of a sudden I see this black bullet come charging through the dog door and out into the backyard. There’s Maggie, a huge smile on her face and so excited that she escaped the house and can start the game! I laughed so hard and was so proud of her bravery. She reasoned it out that she didn’t have to wait at the deck door – she could race around and out the dog door and get a head start on Jack! No way could I put her back in the house as I did with Jack…so now I probably have to close the dog door when we play find the food.
She just learned to use the dog door last month and now…Magic Maggie, our little rulebreaker.

Which is your dog, a rule breaker or rule follower?

mondaymischief   We are joining up with the Monday Mischief Blog Hop, hosted by Snoopy's Dog Blog, Alfie’s Blog and My Brown Newfies

  1. We spend way too much time training for them to be rule breakers, lol. They can be a little mischievous sometimes, though. Most of the time it’s just silly stuff I don’t care about.

  2. That is so sweet! So happy Maggie is getting more comfortable all the time. Sometimes the rule breakers are the best! Mom’s rescue dog was like Jake, never did a thing wrong and had a terrible conscience if she got caught doing something wrong which was rare. My sisters and I don’t know the dark side of life, so we don’t mind breaking rules. Katie was real naughty, but as she has gotten older she is more like Jack and never wants to do the wrong thing. Bailie, on the other paw, is naughty enough for all three of us.

    • It was pretty sweet – She was so proud of herself 🙂 Bailie will leave that teenage rebelliousness behind all too soon.

  3. YAY for Magic Maggie! I\’m afraid I\’m not really a rule follower…. probably the rules in my crib are not uniquely defined :o)

  4. Yay Magic Maggie, you go girl!!! Since Bruin is still a youngster and he was just caught chewing the tree skirt, we’d have to say he is the rule breaker. Our Maggie is definitely a rule follower and Miley, well it depends on the day! lol

  6. That Maggie May! Maybe her Mom was a rule breaker too?

  7. Hmmm, I think all 3 of mine would fit into the rule breakers category!

  9. Ha, good question. Cookie likes to please but she likes to make her own rules. Not really breaking any, just making her own. LOL

  10. Definitely a rule breaker! But I wouldn’t have it any other way.

  11. Wilhelm takes great pride in his sneaky ablitites… and poor Brychwyn gets the most worried face when he does. Huxley hides. But the dogs all sound an alarm when Leo or Amelia break the rules… Sometimes it feels like we live in a prison camp! We just don’t allow rummaging through trash, flying around the house or jumping on the counters. It’s not that strict!

    • Yeah, that should be pretty easy. Sally didn’t like it when Tino broke the rules – even though he rarely did…she’d get all indignant.

  12. Stories about Maggie always make me smile. Both she and Jack seem to have a deep appreciation for life in Slimdoggy Land. Harley (nor Leo) for that matter were/are rule breakers – “bender” is a more descriptive word to use with Harley.

  13. Oh how cute! Maggie must have been so proud of herself! Ace is like Jack and will never break the rules either. He always wants to do the right thing. If I tell him “no” his feelings often seem to get hurt.

  14. Mr. N is pretty good about following the rules. He likes to make up his own rules for things I haven’t even thought of though. He thinks that if he clicks the clicker, he should get a treat.

  15. I couldn’t have put her inside either. Such a cute story! Go Maggie!

  16. I’d say both guys are pretty good about the rules, but then we are pretty lenient as well. No a lot to follow 😉

    • Makes it easier when there aren’t too many rules. I think that’s why Jack follows them so easily.

  17. I am definitely a rulebreaker! I mean, I will follow the rules… as long as the feedback is consistent. As soon as you\’re not paying attention, that\\\’s when I\\\’m going for whatever I want to do! Hee hee! *wags*

  19. It must feel so good to see Maggie showing a sense of mischief and fun.

Honey is definitely a rule follower. Which means that those rare occasions when she breaks a rule are so shocking.

I put a peanut butter sandwich down near here while I was helping a customer at our summer’s yard sale. For twenty minutes Honey ignored it. But eventually she decided she had obeyed the rules long enough and scarfed it up in one bite.

I couldn’t be angry. After all, I was the stupid person who put a peanut butter sandwich on the ground beside a golden retriever. 🙂

  20. Blueberry is mostly a rule follower, except for 10% of the time when her stubborn cattle dog half takes over. 😉

    Maggie cracks me up!

  21. Vaks is definitely our rule breaker. I don’t break the rules except I always opens the door to our livingroom. That door must not be closed LOL.

  22. I’m glad to see Maggie is finding her confidence! My girls are both pretty good, but we’re certain they break the no bed/no couch rule when we are out – we’ve found little indentations on the bedspread that can only be from paws!

  23. Sheba is probably our only real rule follower. Cricket can’t be bothered, especially when there’s treats involved, and Luke….well, you’ve read the stories. Maybe he’ll outgrow it and become a follower.

I can’t help but be happy for Maggie that she is being assertive like that!

All of our Chessies are rule breakers. They may go along with a rule but only until they can figure out a way to break it.
