Oh, The Places You’ll Go!

You are probably familiar with the Dr. Seuss book, “Oh, the places you’ll go”. It was his last published book and has evolved into somewhat of a motivational tome for graduates, or anyone facing a life change or challenge. I just think it’s a fun book with some fun quotes that make me think of our dog Tino. Tino was our adventurer and if you haven’t read about any of his many, many adventures, I suggest you check them out.

Tino was always up for something new or something different. Even after he went blind at age 9, he never let that stop him. He had almost as many adventures after his blindness as he did before. If old age hadn’t slowed him down he would have had them right up until he passed at age 14.5.

“You’re off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting,
So… get on your way!”
― Dr. Seuss, Oh, The Places You’ll Go!

What a great sentiment and really embodies the mentality of our best friends. Always up for an adventure, a mountain to climb, a stream to explore, a bunny to chase. I think Tino’s favorite adventure was exploring the mountains in Big Bear. He wasn’t a fan of the water, but the mountains, oh yeah, they were great. Both he and Sally were reliable enough with their recall that we could let them off leash. They would climb rocks, race around the big trees and investigate every fallen log thoroughly for signs of coyotes or whatever they were smelling on those logs.
After a long hike in the mountains, Tino would collapse into a deep afternoon nap – the sleep of the well-exercised dog!

What is your dog’s favorite adventure?

  1. What a sweet boy and how nice to have him 14.5 years. My dogs favorite adventure is snow goose hunting in saskatchewan

  2. That’s the best kind of sleep 😉 Buzz’s favorite exercise is playing fetch with his beloved ball, and Missy loves, loves, loves to swim!

  3. It’s great to have an “Indiana-Jones” on four legs like your Tino :o) Easy’s current favourite adventure is to visit the cows on a meadow… they always wait for him and then they walk with him as long as they can :o)

  4. Irrespective of species, Suess is an inspiration. Like Tino, my two love long hikes through the woods.

  5. I love Dr. Seuss and we have given that book to graduates. The boys are up for any adventure as long as there are new smells involved.

  6. Nothing better than some Dr. Suess, a good workout and a nap! Mom used to have those same sheets she says. It was before my time, though.

  7. This weekend, I took Scout to a local field to have a walk / play date with a friend’s Great Dane puppy. It was fun – a lot of fun – to see them exploring and enjoying themselves. Afterwards, Scout and I went to a lake where he watched the ducks for a bit. Then off to Starbucks for a Puppichino.

When we got home, he was still raring to go, so we played in the yard with his siblings and then everyone slept for hours afterwards.

    It was a great day!

  8. This makes me smile. It is such a lesson in how they deal with challenges. Like, ok, let’s get living and not dwell in what happened. Awesome.

  9. Blueberry has her favorite park that we don’t get to very often. Tons of bunnies to stalk, lots of interesting smells, water sources to walk through. My favorite place is anywhere I can take her. Errands, walks, always better with a Blueberry by my side. 🙂

  10. I’ve started riding my bike a gain with my woof cycle leashed Jaxson!! It’s our little “mommy & me” time everyday (unless it rains!). Harley doesn’t seem to mind, because he never really liked the leash attachment, and he’s not a mid-day walker much.

  11. Thank goodness dogs don’t listen to people telling them what they can’t do. Sounds like Tino had a great and adventurous life.

  12. I think my Sampson is a LOT like your Tino. While he may be slowing down some, he’s always ready, whether I want to walk or we’re packing the car. He may not move like he used to, but he still enjoys it.
