More Christmas Memories

This will be Jack’s third Christmas with us and Maggie’s second. I hate to admit being a scrooge, but we haven’t had a real Christmas celebration at our house in several years. Yes, we’ve celebrated it with family and gifts and all that, but I haven’t decorated the house in four years. Some legitimate excuses (family illness) and some not so legitimate (laziness). But this year, we decided to decorate.

I used to do Christmas up big when I was younger and lived back east. First, it felt like Christmas, cold, snowy and all that. But the best was my dad owned a garden store and they sold Christmas trees and decorations and all the trimmings and I got to take whatever I wanted for free. Needless to say, I always had a beautiful tree and decorations. Time went on, I moved away and certainly wasn’t going to lug all that stuff with me from Syracuse to DC to Manhattan to Los Angeles, so I had no decorations.

When we finally settled in LA and got our puppy Sally, it seemed time to do Christmas again. Sally loved Christmas – she was into the whole tearing the wrapping off, playing with the boxes and eventually finding whatever was inside. Of course we wrapped gifts for her and for Tino, toys, treats, bones, etc. And Sally used to always give us gifts as well – usually a dog toy or dog treat – she was thoughtful like that and would get us just what SHE wanted 😉 .

Regular cut Christmas trees never last too long out here in SoCal – it’s just too darn warm, so we started buying potted Christmas trees and then planting them in the yard after Christmas. This is one of the first trees we planted in our current home – probably from 9 years ago and it is planted in our front yard.

xmastree101This is the same tree from the photo above, after 9 years – probably 25′ tall.

This year we got a tree – and for us it’s relatively big. Here’s a photo of Jack sitting in front of it before we brought it in the house. Now I just have to figure out where to plant it in the yard – knowing it’s going to grow to 20-30 feet!

jack2013treeNot much mischief around our house nowadays, everyone is on their best behavior at this time of year, but we’re joining the Mischief Monday Hop anyways!

  1. That is a big tree, but very pretty. Is it heavy to lug indoors?

    • It said something about not running a script on my computer, so I entered the other comment and submitted and it worked fine. No clue. No worries, computers are that way.

      • Weird – you know I see those once in awhile on different sites and I bet it’s the ads…cause it’s not on the same site all the time.

  3. Love your tree! We always get a real tree too, I just love the real ones.

I’ve always wondered how it would be to live in an area that wasn’t cold during Christmas. Seeing as I’ve always lived in Ohio I think it would be a big adjustment!
Hope you have decorating the tree!

    • It’s kind of weird that’s it’s almost hot sometimes – it will probably be in the 70’s today. I love the weather here, but at this time of year I really miss the cold and snow. But it sure doesn’t seem christmasy.

  4. Great tree! Love your pics! you look so great in front of that tree!!
We have a fake tree, because we thought a real one would just call out to the cats of the house to much……….fake tree made no difference, cats still wanna climb it LOL

  5. I haven’t decorated since my kids grew up and moved out. This year we are two people alone in the desert, and that’s OK with us. I know….scrooge huh? LOL

    • It’s tough to get motivated I know. Put a red sweater on 😉

  6. Fun memories of Syr…love the tree, Jack…did you start your shopping?

  7. I think that this time of year everyone feels the compulsion (mostly due to the media), to decorate, be merry, etc, etc and sometimes life puts events in our way (as you mentioned, illness, etc that make it hard to do so). Glad to see that this year you will be able to enjoy the festivities!!

  8. I’m with you, sometimes the decorations seem like more trouble than the worth. But in the end, I’m always glad I put them up. Good looking tree!

    • Now that they are up I’m glad…wish someone else would put them away for me though come January!

  9. Gorgeous trees! We got a cut one. We don’t really have a good place to plant a live one, although I wish we did. Our cut one is actually lasting okay – even with as dry and warm as it’s been. It’s been drinking a lot of water! Which reminds me… I better go check if it needs another drinky!

Good to hear the dogs on our their best behavior! They must know Santa is watching!

    • We used to get cut ones and they would just dry out so quick…and all the needles would fall off!

  10. Love the idea of planting a tree outside instead! You can’t decorate it like you would indoors but you can still string lights and that way even more people can enjoy.

    • No, we bring it indoors for the holiday – big pot of dirt and all – decorate it and then plant it outside!

  11. I don’t decorate for Christmas very often either. Usually just if we are celebrating it at my house and we haven’t done that in a while since other houses are more centrally located for everyone. I also tend to get potted Christmas trees. I have 4 that I have planted over the years. Mostly because I am just too sad to throw away the tree at the end of the season.

That’s a beautiful tree you bought!

    • Thanks – it looks pretty good. It’s actually bigger than what gotten in the past, but it is pretty.

  12. One year I became highly allergic to pine and that put a stop to our real Christmas tree. When we moved into our current house one of my friends gave me her 7 foot, pre-lit tree and it’s served us very well these last six years. I sort of miss the real tree but then I remember all the pine needles and it makes me kind of glad that we don’t have one. LOL

I love your idea of planting the tree though, that’s awesome!!

    • Wow, funny just this year I’ve gotten a bit of an allergy – contact allergy, so only when I touch it. Had to wear rubber gloves to decorate – felt like a surgeon or something.

  13. Roooo we don’t have a Christmas tree yet because we just moved house and there’s no space for it amongst all the boxes *Waggy tail*. Yours look pawsome tho!

    • Too bad…but I bet having a new house is fun!

  14. We got a tree this weekend as well and decorated it. No room for us to plant one though. Onyxx’s idea of helping is licking an ornament. I hope Jack and Maggie are more helpful!

  17. The tree is beautiful, I am glad you were like me and decided to decorate this holiday season. It does make the place brighter and now more memories can be made. I actually am glad I did it so secretly I am like you and wonder what Gambler is going to do and make me smile even know everyone else will think he is naughty. He makes me smile with his antics. Have a blessed Holiday season.

  18. I think it’s great you get a tree that you can plant, and that you have decided to decorate this year. I almost didn’t decorate….with Thanksgiving being late I was feeling like I didn’t have enough time for everything. But I couldn’t help myself and still decorated the house, though we didn’t have a tree this year.
It’s a good thing if you don’t have any mischief once you’ve put your tree and decorations up! 🙂
