Monday Mischief? Barely…

I know today is Monday Mischief – one of our favorite Blog Hops, but we have something more important to talk about today. We are hijacking the Mischief post to talk about Pet Wellness. Can’t believe that it is almost October already but it is and October is National Pet Wellness month. A month focused on pet health and wellness. We focus on it every day, but now, hopefully EVERYONE will pay closer attention!  Much of what we’ve seen written about this month in the past is about prevention – and preventing illness (the opposite of “well”ness) in your pet means being prepared and being vigilant. We will be writing more about it during the month – especially in conjunction with our initiative. If you haven’t joined PetsMove or read about it – head on over – lots of fun things to do and take part in as we build the program to get our pets moving. We will dedicate much of what we do and accomplish this month to National Pet Wellness Month!

petobesity awareness

Also this month is the very important Pet Obesity Awareness Day on October 9th. The Association for Pet Obesity Awareness sets aside this day each year to raise awareness to this problem and also to kick off their annual Pet Obesity Awareness Survey. This year, pet owners can participate as well as veterinarians. Take the time to send your name and info in to the Association so they can gather accurate data for this survey. Why is that important? Well as with any ’cause’ data drives funding. To demonstrate the need for more awareness and possibly more programs to help fight pet obesity through education, training, etc. we need more data to prove the size and scope of the problem. Take a few moments to participate.

We are also thinking of doing something special on the 9th. We wanted to do something different than a Blog Hop, since we do those every week on FitDog Friday and we wanted to get our readers – and your readers more engaged. Infographics are big right now, so our favorite idea so far is to create an inspirational infographic of stories and pictures of your pets weight loss journey or daily exercise routine.  It can be a before/after photo (like we did of Jack on Friday), a short anecdote or just a quick story about how you keep your pet trim or your favorite tip you share with friends who have a chubby puppy.  You can post it to your Blog or your FaceBook page, just leave a comment here at SlimDoggy or Tweet to us (@myslimdoggy) or post to our FB page (http://facebook/slimdoggy) telling us that you’ve entered and we will gather all of the submissions and turn them into an Infographic that we can all use and share (with proper attribution of course). This effort is open to everyone, bloggers, readers, twitter followers, PetsMove members…everyone can join in and help raise awareness about pet obesity.

And just so today isn’t a totally wasted Mischief Monday – here’s a photo of Jack playing a little mischief. He climbs on the bench and peeks out the front window when we are hiding the treats in the front yard for ‘hide the food’.

We are joining the Monday Mischief Blog Hop hosted by Snoopy’s Dog Blog, Alfie’s Blog, Luna Dogs Life and My Brown Newfies

  3. I will be forever thankful for the inspiration and information I received that helped us help Sydney loose her extra weight and helped Rodrigo trim down a bit. Even Blue has gained a little weight. Our dogs are so much healthier, because I have a better relationship with dog nutrition and exercise.

Excited to participate in your venture.

  4. Good Morning, SlimDoggy! I’ll be doing something, I’m sure, even though my 3 girls are at healthy weights. (Actually, I think Callie could stand to gain a pound or two; but I want it to be a gradual gain, not an “instant” one.)

    • So glad you will be joining us. Tips on how you KEEP them at a healthy weight are welcome and just as important as the tips for losing weight.

I am always trying to stay on top of Sherman and Leroy’s weight, it’s so important to keep them lean!

    • Especially with Sherman’s ortho problems. We got Jack off his ortho meds (Rimadyl) once he lost his xtra lbs. No signs of it now that he is at 80lbs.

    • That is sad. I hope you explained that he probably ISN’T very happy and that they are killing him at an early age. Obese pets live on average two years less than lean dogs…maybe that will make an impact on them! So sad.

  9. This is great and I’ll figure out how to participate! As you know, I’m pretty passionate about dog fitness so we’ll contribute something for sure. I’ll be hosting my first hop on Oct. 7 for National Walk Your Dog Week and planning to do something with around that! So exciting following alongside SlimDoggy!!!

  10. I think your food hunt is in need of some scent hounds. I will collect Bailie and see about getting a ride to your place to help sniff out the food 🙂 Nice idea with the infographic. It may be a huge one, though, depending on the response you get!

The bigger the better we say on the infographic…or maybe we’ll have multiples. I love making work for myself!

  12. Hi Y’all!

Funny Jack! Funny you should mention wellness, since it was at my well dog exam that was ordered to reduce food intake…and then of course my Human figured ways to increase the intensity of my exercise…but stop by and see the result…
