Lots of Vacation Mischief? Not So Much…

We spent last week on vacation at Big Bear Lake in California. It was the first vacation we’ve had in several years and the first one where we took Jack & Maggie with us. Given their background, we’re pretty certain that neither of them had experienced anything like this, hiking in the mountains, swimming in the lake, lounging on the deck, just being in a strange house. All wonderful & exciting activities – what could go wrong? Nothing really – it was a great time with a few small side trips into mischief.

WHEN YOU FINALLY GET TO THE TOP, THIS IS YOUR FIRST VIEW OF THE LAKE OFF IN THE DISTANCE

I drove up with the dogs early on Tuesday and Steve was joining us after some meetings in LA. Sally & Tino traveled with us often enough to know the signs of an impending adventure, but Jack & Maggie had no clue what was going on. They began to suspect something was up with all the activity Tuesday morning, but they didn’t know what, or whether they were included. I think Jack understood first. He’d been following me pretty closely all morning as I packed and got things ready and then started packing the car, back and forth – extra tight velcro-dog. That is until I put the box with the dog food in the back of the SUV…then he stood guard next to the car door and didn’t bother following me anymore. Did he know he was going, or did he just want to stay close to the food?

The drive was uneventful. It’s a quick 3 hour drive from our house up into the San Bernardino Mountains and into a serene mountain lake setting. But nobody told Jack & Maggie it was serene, or that we were on vacation. Our two seniors are pretty set in their ways, and their daily routine is pretty important and comforting to them. Remember, Jack lived in a shelter for over a year and Maggie is afraid of her own shadow sometimes, so the first few hours in this new environment was pretty stressful for them. Where are we, what are we doing here, are you going to leave us here, where am I going to sleep, where am I going to poop, where’s dad, where’s DINNER? I’m sure they had a million questions…if dogs have questions.

Once unpacked, I tried to relax and sit on the deck overlooking the water and enjoy the gorgeous view. Jack joined me, but Maggie stayed inside, in her bed, her safe zone. We took a few walks around the neighborhood and down to the water for a potty break and they started enjoying all the smells and new sights. Of course the first thing Jack did was find a dead fish that had floated in and ate it faster then it even registered with me what he had it in his mouth. (Mischief #1). Lovely I thought, let’s hope he doesn’t get sick on that!

By the time dad arrived several hours later, we’d all eaten and gotten settled in and were ready for the vacation to begin! Here’s some first day photos. Stay tuned for more adventures and photos throughout the week.

  6. We stayed at a B&B in Big Bear a few years ago. It was so nice! That place you stayed looks lovely!! Is that a VRBO place by any chance? Would love to know a great place on a lake that’s dog-friendly! We are going to Oregon w/ Rita for our vaca (still a long way off, but counting the days…) and we can’t wait! Have enjoyed seeing your pics of the pups in BB on Facebook and look forward to seeing more!

  10. What a beautiful place to relax! Barley and I are going on our first vacation together next month. Even though she’s spent plenty of time traveling back and forth to my family’s house, I’m a little anxious about how she’ll do in a place neither of us has ever been before. I hope Maggie eventually warmed up to sitting outside with you, too!

    • We’ve done it many times…mostly for the dogs, but nothing beats sitting on the dock with your feet in the water watching the boats go by. Highly recommend it.
