K9 Kamp – Fitness Fun & Games

We’ve been remiss in getting our K9 Kamp posts together and posted. The latest K9 Kamp Challenge is Fitness Fun & Games. Everything Jack does is a game to him, so this is an easy one. But neither Jack or Maggie like to play fetch, or tug, or chase, so we decided to do the one thing they both really enjoy and that’s take a long hike to a new spot. To them, going to a new spot is like a game – they get to walk a new trail, see new stuff and best of all the get to sniff all the new smells – and it’s kind of like “follow the leader” with Jack. He’s typically out front, I’m in the middle and Maggie trails behind.

I decided to take them to our normal park, but instead of doing the fairly easy hike we do, I thought we would hike up the ‘big’ hill.  We normally take the yellow route – which is a nice 35 minute loop. But last weekend we walked up the farmer’s trail to the top of the mountain. It was about 35 minutes to the top and then back down again. This is an old picture – in the foreground is where the ‘pepper field’ is, this picture is from last fall I think after the harvest. (I know the red dot doesn’t look like the ‘top’, but it’s kind of a separate hilltop back behind the one in the front).

hilltophike00Here’s a different angle of our route and the great scenery we had on the way up. This is taken from about half-way up the hill. You can see the fields are all green with the pepper crop now.

hilltophike01Here we are on the way up – Jack stopping to take in the scenery.

hilltophike05Here’s the highest point that I took a picture at. It seems that the higher we went, the more coyote poop and their dinner leavings (dead carcasses) Jack was able to find, so I couldn’t let him wander too far and couldn’t focus on doing a nice picture. If you read our Facebook post yesterday you’ll know that this excursion cost Jack several days of vomiting.

hilltophike02Except for the subsequent stomach problems, it was a great hike – they had a lot of FUN and certainly a lot of FITNESS and so did momz! I think that qualifies for a good K9 Kamp outing!

We are excited to join in the fall K9 Kamp brought to you by: Peggy’s Pet Place, Kol’s Notes and You Did What With Your Weiner.

  1. That looks like a lot of fun! I wish hubby, the girls, and I lived in a quiet neighborhood, or closer to the park, so I could really take them for a good walk without having to constantly look over my shoulder to be sure we’re safe! That’s one of the few things I miss about my home town…I could walk for miles, in the middle of the road if I wanted to, and never worry about my safety, or my dog’s safety.

  2. I hope Jack is feeling better today, bless his heart!

  3. What a beautiful hike! Sorry it didn’t end well for Jack, and hope he is still feeling better. We hope to hike this weekend, I wasn’t sure if that would qualify for K9 Kamp or not, so I’m glad to see you had the same idea. I can’t seem to get the girls interested in any other games either, other than fetch, which they play almost every day so it wouldn’t be anything new for them!

  5. Sounds awesome except for the puking part. My sister does that stuff all the time. I have insides of steel and rarely get ill but she is the one the eats everything so that is a bad thing!

  7. I couldn’t agree more…Gizmo and I love tackling new trails…I’m always searching geocaching.com to see if there’s caches posted on a property we haven’t visited … Those are the hikes where we push ourselves to go farther and longer, perfect for K9 Kamp. Hope Jack is feeling better now

  8. I saw your posts about Jack being sick. You would think after a few good ralphs dogs would learn not to eat that again. Nope. Chester has an annoying habit of eating our socks and then upchuking all over my rug. Yuck. Glad you were able to get out for a hike. Feels good doesn’t it?

  9. Yikes poor Jack. I am so far out of the loop that I have not had much time on FB. I didn’t know the poor guy was so sick. I am glad to hear he is doing better. Looks like a nice hike.
