Jack & Maggie’s Birthday

jack maggie in fieldIf you read our blog, you know that our two dogs, SlimDoggy Jack & Maggie are rescues. We rescued Jack in 2011 and Maggie in 2012 when our dog’s Tino and Becca passed. Since they are both rescues we’re not really sure of their birthdays. Jack was found wandering in the mountains above Simi Valley, so we are really guessing at his age. The rescue organization advertised him as 4-5 years old although when we picked him up they revised it to 6-7. Our vet thought he was closer to 7, maybe even eight and that was 2 years ago. I like to err on the side of youth, so I always claim Jack is 8, but in reality he could be as old as 10. Watching him in action, running and doing his other workouts with Steve, he sure doesn’t seem like a senior citizen. He is by far the strongest dog we’ve ever had – he’s an ox.

Maggie was surrendered by the breeding farm owner who used her as a breeding mom. The rescue organization told us she was 8 years old, but didn’t have much other information as anonymity was part of their arrangement with the owner in exchange for the surrender of Maggie. I think that age is probably accurate. She was pretty malnourished when we got her, and we’ve been building up her strength and stamina over the past year, but she absolutely is a senior and it shows on her more than it does with Jack.dog birthday

Since we don’t know their birthdays, I tend to think of them at the same age as when we got them and we don’t have a ‘celebration’. My fellow bloggers have inspired me to be a bit more creative this year and celebrate, not a birthday day, but a “Gotcha Day’ a day many of us who adopt dogs celebrate to commemorate the day you adopted your furkid. Since we adopted both Jack & Maggie in the summer months, I am arbitrarily picking July 27th as their Gotcha Day. Actually, it’s not arbitrary at all, that just happens to be the REAL birthday of our first dog, our chocolate lab Sweet Sally Brown, so I thought it was a fitting day to celebrate the continued extension of our family.

July 27th is next Saturday, so I’ve got to get my planning underway and am hoping all of Jack & Maggie’s friends will help me come up with some good ideas for the party. I’m open to all ideas so please add them to the comments – food, toys, games, outings – whatever you think Jack & Maggie would enjoy.

But it’s a SURPRISE, so don’t tell them 😉     It’s a little mom mischief for Mischief Monday.

  1. I know the birthdays of the Poodles, but I always forget. I don’t know the birthdays of the dogs, but I never think about planning a gotcha day because I forgot when we got them. Am I a terrible dog owner? Maybe I should just select a day to celebrate for everyone.

    • Yep – that’s what I’m doing…just pick a day – and then write it down 😉

  2. Have loads of fun. We guessed at our dogs birthdays too. Rodrigo and Sydney were gifted with March 31st (or is it March 1st). And Blue is February 1st.

Yeah, March 31st is their birthday. The cats were born in July – 10 years ago and 8 years ago. I don’t think they’d appreciate a party unless it was in the middle of the night, occurred on a pair of black pants and I had my notebook sitting in my lap. LOL

  3. I love this post and the idea of a Gotcha Day! The rescue org where I got Kayo told me to pick a date between a range and I chose July 10, a very significant day for me. I love Jack and Maggie’s stories and are thankful that they’re in your home and being so well cared for. Have a great celebration! The 27th is also National Dance Day…one of my favorite days! ;0)

  4. I love how you picked their Gotcha Day! I think that is so sweet and thoughtful! We normally don’t do too much for Sherman and Leroy’s birthdays, a special treat that they normally wouldn’t get and a nice walk in a new place is about the extent of it!

    • I know a new walk is always appreciated, so I think that will be on the list.

  5. Happy Gotcha Day to Jack and Maggie early. Sorry we won’t be able to come to your party. I am going to be at Superzoo all week and don’t get back until Saturday night.

  6. That sounds like a really good idea. They sure are beautiful pups. 🙂 Of course Storm votes for something frozen for a birthday treat…lol.

  7. I love your method in deciding when to celebrate! Our tradition is a birthday trip to DQ where the dogs share a small dish of ice cream. Since it is just on bdays, we figure: where’s the harm? And yes, all of our dogs eat off a spoon and know to take their turn nicely 🙂

    • Several frozen treat suggestions and since they don’t often get them…that may get on the list.

    • Jack loves bully sticks and elk antlers…unfortunately Maggie lost a few teeth so she usually only likes softer things.

  9. My two kitties were adopted as adults and we can only guess their ages. We celebrate their gotcha day as their birthday every year. If it is hot out, make them some yummy homemade fruit ice cream…they will love it! We usually get to go for a nice walk on our favorite trails followed by yummy homemade treats. It makes our birthdays great!

  11. Happy Gotcha Day guys! I would think that Maggie shows her age and weakness due to giving birth to so many litters she could even be younger. What lucky dogs they are to have been found by you! Love Dolly

  13. Yay for their gotcha day!!

I think they’d really like an ‘all you can eat buffet’ with all their favorite food on the table! Tee Hee

    Have lottsa fun guys

    Your pal Snoopy 🙂

    • They absolutely would like that, but I don’t think that will happen. Maybe an extra long game of ‘find the food’.

  15. Oh, a surprise pawrty! How fun! Rita recommends the celebratory food that she gets on her Gotcha Day and Birthday – a Flying Dutchman from In-N-Out burger. (Just the patties and the cheese.) Always a hit at our house! And not exactly “slim doggy” friendly, so you gotta save it for a very special ocassion! Which this will be! 🙂

    • Hmmm, in-and-out burger – I’m afraid if Jack finds out about that, it will no longer be ‘slim’doggy…

  16. You obviously need to have Jones Chews on hand. A party’s not a party without Jones. Lamb Lung Puffs make great party treats, as do Windees Rings. Nothing says party like trachea slices. For homemade party treats, Golden Sugar is a great resource. Watermelon pupsicles, yogurt banana pops – the list of yummy treats is endless!
Flea recently posted…Funny Bone Monday, 33My Profile

    • Jack goes through those trachea things like they are butter. Maggie doesn’t like anything too hard – what do you suggest?
      mkob recently posted…Jack & Maggie’s BirthdayMy Profile

  17. They’re both large-ish, but if Maggie’s not a gnawer, I’d say any of the taffies would be great, or the lung puffs. The lung puffs are a lot like divinity in texture – light, puffy, melt-in-the-mouth. They look a little like a small grilled steak. Dogs can’t get enough of them, and they’re NOT hard.

Another great chew is the taffy. Beef Liver or Rabbit taffy are both good options. They tear apart easily for giving in small bites, say, as a reward while training. Taffy is chewy without being hard.

Pig ears might be a good option, but they’re a higher fat content. That might not be good if Maggie tends to pack on the pounds. A way to make that work would be to use the kitchen shears to snip off pieces for her.
Flea recently posted…Funny Bone Monday, 33My Profile

    • I might try that taffy – I like to give them something to occupy their time after dinner, so something that takes her 5-10 minutes. The taffy might work, I’ll try it. thanks.
      mkob recently posted…Jack & Maggie’s BirthdayMy Profile

      • Oh! Well if you’re looking to occupy her time, then get a hollow center bone, fill it with pumpkin puree and freeze it. That will keep her busy. Or watermelon or banana mashed and frozen.

  18. Advance Happy Gotcha Day! Getting pampered like going to a doggie spa before your Gotcha day will be fun. Of course celebrate with Lots of Tasty DELISH treats. You can re-create some of our Frosty (Pupsicle) recipes. Lots of Golden Woofs, Sugar

  20. That is great that you picked the 27th as the gotcha day. How nice to keep the memory of sweet sally brown going. For Gman’s 2nd bday I did bobbing for hotdogs. You could do a spa day and get a blueberry treatment from your local grooming parlor if they offer it. Have a great night.
