Jack & Maggie Gotcha Day 2014

This weekend we celebrated Jack & Maggie’s Gotcha Day with a big virtual party and some toys and of course a cake. I thought I was going to have to make a cake for them and I send a big thank-you to all of our Facebook friends for offering some great recipes. Luckily, Steve bought one for us, so I was saved that ordeal, or I should say Jack & Maggie were saved from having to eat it.
Our virtual party was a great success and is still going on today, so if you’d like to submit a photo of your pet (not limited to dogs) in their party gear, please do. For every party goer, we will donate $1 to C.A.R.L., the Canine Animal Rescue League, the shelter where we adopted Jack. Check our photo album on Facebook to see the party goers. One lucky guest will win a boat load of SlimDoggy swag (t-shirt, bandana, frisbee & hat).
Why are we celebrating their Gotcha Day? To us it’s an important milestone for both of them. Jack has been with us three years now and Maggie for two. Both have made great strides in their behavior and in their health. Most of you know the story of Jack, but he had been in the shelter for a year when we rescued him, so he was likely a permanent resident. He was overweight and they were treating his anxiety with Prozac. Maggie got tossed out of her breeder farm situation and had already been returned by one adoptive family because of her fearfulness. Integrating them into our family has been a challenge, but we wouldn’t change it for anything. We’ve learned about patience and tolerance and perseverance from working with the two of them and the happiness they bring us each day can’t be measured. I know most of us feel that way about our pets, so our Gotcha Day celebration is just our way of saying thank you to Jack & Maggie for making us smile each and every day. Here’s some of the photos from their party.

Jack sitting politely, waiting for his cake.
Getting Maggie to sit next to the cake was a bit of a challenge. Steve tries to entice her.
Then she realized there was CAKE, and it became a little easier to get her to pose.
Finally, we get the two of them together with their cake. Jack is losing patience and you can see he has one eye on that cake, but at least we got Maggie in the shot.
After that Jack had enough and takes matters into his own hands, or the cake into his own mouth I should say…
Luckily we were able to salvage some for Maggie.
This is what was left after Jack mauled it.
But all in all, it was quite a party – Maggie says she had lots of fun even if she did come home with her hat on backwards!
Jack even volunteered to be on the clean-up crew.

Thanks to everyone who joined us by sending in their photos. It was a great party and Jack and Maggie are so happy they have so many friends. Remember, there is still time to join us. $1 for every attendee goes to a good cause, so send in your photos to info@slimdoggy.com or post to our FB page.

  1. LOL at Jack taking matters into his own… mouth! Great party photos. I dearly love dogs in party hats 🙂 On a more serious note, thankfully there are folks like you that adopt adult shelter/rescue dogs who most would not take a chance on. Congrats to you all!

  2. Looks like fun and mischief combined! Gotcha days are important and need to be celebrated. Good thing you were able to get the cake away from Jack so Maggie could have some.

  3. Looks like a great party! My girls don’t like being “dressed up”, even just in party hats, so I don’t subject them to it. The only thing I ever insist on them wearing are their raincoats, and then only if it’s pouring or we’ll be out more than a few minutes. If I have a chance later, maybe I can find a party hat in PicMonkey.
Callie, Shadow, and Ducky DO send happy tail wags to Jack and Maggie, though, for their Gotcha Day!

    • Jack was a handful – big and anxious and a lot of pent up energy. He can still be a handful…and then I know it’s time for a run.
