Is this Really Mischief or just Silliness?

We’ve been writing a lot about Jack mischief lately, mainly because he’s been getting into a lot of it, it seems. Today I want to write about a behavior of Jack’s – I’m not sure it’s mischief, but it’s certainly silly.

Jack’s motto when it comes to food, is “Eat it now, taste it later”. Jack tends to eat whatever, wherever, whenever. And he’s not too dainty about it, he’s a gulper.

I can toss a raw brussel sprout or broccoli head in the air and he will grab it, chew it and swallow almost in one motion. There’s no way he possibly could taste it much less appreciate it. Here he is catching broccoli…

Maggie is the complete opposite. She will let something hit her in the head before she would eat it without sniffing it. Every morsel she gets – except meals in her bowl – she pauses and sniffs it before she will eat it, and sometimes she even turns her nose up and walks away – unheard of in Jack’s world.

What about you – are your dogs sniffers or gulpers?

  1. Mr. N is a sniffer and will turn down treats if they don’t meet his standards. Onyxx gulps down everything.

  2. Bailie eats like a machine. She is a bit slower than she was when we first got her, but still gulps it all down. Katie eats slower and slower as she gets older, was never a gulper, though. Me, I have always been a slow eater. As a pup it might take me half an hour to eat my meals. I took pieces out and laid them next to the bowl. Sniffed in the bowl, maybe ate a piece, etc. Now I still eat real slow and enjoy my food. Even treats I take off to a secure and secluded area to really dine on – no matter what the size. At least Jack gets his veggies. I would never do that and would leave that broccoli to rot on the ground. Not a veggie fa.

  4. Silly jack. Mine are gulpers and spitters if they don’t like it. They eat most anything but sometimes you get that item they spit out. They can catch pretty good if I make it a good throw.

  5. haha! Great video!!!! I have different types. Mika is cautious and has to sniff the food before he will touch it, and she is very picky about what she eats. Lexus will catch it, then put it on the ground and see what it is before eating it, and Koda will eat anything, anytime!!! haha!
    Happy St. Paddy’s!

  6. Callie and Ducky are gulpers, except that I now use slow-feed bowls for them that really do slow them down.

Shadow, on the other hand, is more like Maggie. She has to sniff everything (except the food in her bowl). Even the Cosequin DS chewable that she’s been getting twice a day for at least 5 years. You’d think she was making sure I’m not trying to poison her!

  7. Sampson chews his food. Delilah inhales and swallows. Carrots are the only thing she chews, her night-time snack she licks. Besides those two items, I’m not sure she actually knows what food tastes like.

  8. Haha – both Moses and Alma are a combination of the two – they’ll rush to eat something, but they spit it out if they don’t like it (e.g., celery).

  9. Great video! I’m like Jack, but sometimes I examine it (specially when pills are inside). Have a wonderful St. Patricks Monday

  10. Dakota is JUST like Jack! A GULPER! Big time! It blows me away! The only thing I have found so far that he actually seems to “taste” is sweet potato chews. He has to CHEW them, so I am assuming that he is actually “tasting” them! Maybe it is a male/female thing?

  11. Bentley is a gulper and granddog Westie Pierre is a picker. I put some Indigo fresh Breath gravy on his food this weekend and he actually ate the entire bowl at one sitting. I’ve never tried to give either one of them broccoli but if I ate it, Bentley would want to try it too.

  12. Mine can smell the Jones treats from across the room, so they don’t hesitate to gulp, but Flash knows that I try and trick him with veggies, so he’ll stop if he can’t smell it from a distance. Patches will eat just about anything, but she’s naturally dainty. The jury’s still out on the new guy. He was pretty picky when we got him, and still turns his nose up at his food, but he’ll gulp down a treat.

Hey – I have a question for Dear Labby. Someone asked this weekend, “What do you do when your dog won’t eat their food, only treats?” My gut response is, “Sounds like your dog will be hungry for a couple of days until they’re hungry enough to eat the food.” It’s what you tell parents of picky kids, right? But I’m wondering if there isn’t a different way to approach it.

  13. So I conferred with Leo on this one, he said Jack is tasting it on the way down!!!! It’s not mischief – it’s his way of adding a little entertainment with his food intake. Some of us watch television or read while we eat right? #justsaying….

  14. Sherman is the same as Jack and Leroy is the same as Maggie, unless of course it’s rocks, then he just swallows them!

  15. Toby loves that game so much! He is a gulper too – except carrots. He tries to chew them, it’s kinda comical as he doesn’t have the right kind of teeth. Otherwise though, pretty sure he and Jack have the same technique.

  16. Jasper is a true gulper. Tucker usually gulps, but every once in a while, he’ll stop and sniff first. Usually it doesn’t matter though; his favorite outdoor snack is birdseed–though I keep reminding him he’s a dog, not a bird. He’s not even a bird dog, BOL! Lilah, on the other paw, is always a sniffer. Sometimes she’ll even turn her nose up at a treat if it’s not special enough. Maybe she thinks the calories aren’t worth it and want to keep her girlish figure.

  17. Jack are you crazy? That was GREEN veg, you know that right? Are you color blind? I won’t go near green veg! I will even pick the non-green veg out of a line up and leave the greens!

I’m very fussy, Mum even gave me some chicken liver the other day, I hadn’t had it before, so I had to thoroughly investigate it before it passed my lips, you can never be too careful!

Of course if it’s something familiar that I like it goes down as fast as it can! 🙂

    I hope you’re having a fun day,

    Your pal Snoopy 🙂

  19. Frankie has very good table manners, Beryl definitely has to approve of her food first then she eats quickly enough, Asher eats the fastest and is always hungry but none of them would eat a raw brussel sprout! Bananas are supposed to be a healthy treat but none of mine will look at them. I kind of envy people whose dogs eat just about anything … unless they are like Leroy with his rocks!

  21. My brother’s dog is my favorite in this regard. If Dutch sees a human eat it, he’ll want to eat it. Some of my kale fell on the ground and he pounced. I could immediately see he hated the taste, but he kept chewing – I guess he figured if we liked it, it must get good…eventually

    • Too funny. Maggie is a little like that with Jack – if she sees him eating it, then there’s a better chance she will eat it.

  22. Well, it depends on what it is. If it’s a fruit or vegetable, Sheba will sniff it and chew it very cautiously. Anything else she does like Jack, chews maybe once or twice and that’s it. Cricket is more like Maggie, also especially when it comes to fruits and veggies. Now that Luke is here ready to take anything those two girls drop though, they’re eating more of their fruits and veggies!

  24. Haha! I love Jack! He is so funny! I guess that’s one way to get a dog to eat his vegetables! Ace is usually like Maggie and has to sniff the food first. If he’s not sure what it is, sometimes he lets it hit him right in the face too!

I have a cat that will make a mad dash for anything that drops to the floor, however, and he will consume it without stopping to see what it is first. Onions, green beans, peppers …
