Give Cancer the Paw

give cancer the paw button_smToday is the Give Cancer the Paw Blog Hop. I understand it’s going to be the last Hop and is dedicated to our pets that have had cancer. Our Becca is my cancer hero. We’ve written about her struggles and treatment for osteosarcoma in the past here and here so I’m not going to rehash her story. What I will do is share some photos and fun times we had with Becca for the short time she was with us.

Becca loved to play. She couldn’t do too much because she had such a bad back (fused spine from being a service dog), but she was always up for a game of fetch, even at her worst. She loved her deflated soccer ball the best, but the frisbee was a good substitute.

She received physical therapy for most of the three years she was with us. She would even play fetch while on the water treadmill.

When she got sick – reactions to the radiation and the chemo – we would snuggle her into bed with a heating pad and blankets to keep her warm as she would shiver from the cold – she just couldn’t retain her body heat.

She was just as good at begging from the table as her new brother Jack. (Looks like Maggie doesn’t she?)

We lost her just two years ago – taken from us to osteosarcoma quickly. But we sure loved having her with us and know we will see her again.

  11. We have not had to experience how difficult it is to deal with a pet going through cancer treatments. Becca was so loved through the end we’re sure she knew it. Love Dolly

  15. She’s such a beauty. We lost Abby 2 1/2 years ago. You never really “get over” it, but you at least get to a point where you can smile more about the memories than cry. It sounds like Becca had a similar deal to Abby – not a lot of quantity of life, but they both made up for it by having a great quality of life! I hope they’re playing together now. Thank you so much for joining the hop!

  20. Becca was beautiful, sorry she was taken away so soon. Sounds like she was a real trooper, chemo is rough, I can’t imagine it was easy. We never do get over the loss of a pet, I’m very sorry to hear about Becca. It’s such a horrible, aggressive disease. Here’s to hoping further research will bring comfort to those who are suffering from cancer, and hopes to a cure in not so far away future. Hasn’t it already claimed enough?
