We are now headed into week 2 of the FitDog Friday Fall Fitness Challenge. To summarize the challenge, we have partnered with ABOUND Pet Food for the month of October to create a series of tips that will help you and your dog remain fit and healthy as we head into the fall season.

Week 2 Challenge: Superfood, Super Circuit

The second challenge is called “Superfood, Super Circuit”. The theme of this week’s challenge is twofold:

  1. Create a fun exercise circuit that you can perform with your dog that can be used as part of your regular exercise routine. Please share your circuit in the comment section.
  2. Scan your dog’s food and identify a superfood that is included in the recipe. Please share this in the comments as well.

SlimDoggy Tips for the Superfood, Super Circuit Challenge

When setting up an exercise circuit for you and your dog, it is prudent to create mix of exercises that will work different aspects of fitness. For example, with my own training, I will typically mix in a cardio move with a strength move so that my cardio system can somewhat recover when performing the strength move, and vice versa. The same logic holds true when designing a circuit for your dog.  Here is an example circuit that you can try with your dog.

  • Sprint 40 meters
  • Up downs, 3 reps
  • Sprint 40 meters
  • Balance on a cushion, 30 seconds

Repeat up to 10 times.
This drill is pretty self-explanatory. I would set up cones 40 yards apart, leaving a balance cushion at one end. Sprint back and forth between the cones, performing the up downs at one cone and the balance work at the other.

Step 2:
Maggie does a modified burpee…mostly it’s just rolling around on her back.

Regarding superfoods, a fantastic non-meat ingredient for your dog is any kind of berry. Berries provide anti-oxidants and can be anti-inflammatory, both of which are needed after an intense workout. I always choose dog foods that contain berries and will often supplement with local berries that we purchase from the market.

The ABOUND Grain Free Salmon & Sweet Potato Recipe contains both Cranberries and Blueberries as part of its recipe, both of which can provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory support (among other things) for your dog.
