Feeding Pets a Variety of Food Ingredients Help Them Stay Healthy
Dr. Greg, from Dogdishdiet.com wrote a piece recently about dog’s diets and how it can impact your dog’s health. Even minor issues like skin itchiness can be ‘cured’ with an adjustment to diet. When we first got our (now passed) Chocolate Lab Sweet Sally Brown, we noticed that she had terribly itchy skin. We switched food brands and saw an almost immediate improvement. In Sally’s case, it turned out that she had an allergy to Lamb, but the point is still the same– food choices can impact your pet’s health.
Dr. Greg also points out that dogs were meant to eat meat:
“If we consider what their ancestors ate, then carbohydrates may actually not be needed at all. Protein, fat, and moisture would be the diet! An all meat diet would contain much more protein and fat and a bit less moisture. Dogs are carnivores with an omnivore slant to help in times that prey are scarce.”
Keep this in mind when choosing your dog’s food. Look for meats (not by-products nor meals) and avoid starchy fillers.
