dog life span2

We are often asked about the average life expectancy for different breeds of dogs so we started to compile a list for our readers.  This data was pulled from several sources including vetinfo.com and pets.ca. While this data provides a view of relative longevity by breed, there are many factors that will influence how long your dog will actually live.  Keeping your dog fit and at a healthy weight alone can add about 15% to your dog’s life as we wrote about before.

Here are some factors that may help your dog live longer.

  • Healthy lifestyle with sufficient exercise and mental stimulation will result in a longer living dog and a higher overall quality of life for them as well.
  • Proper nutrition, as part of a healthy lifestyle, ensures that you dog is getting the nutrients it needs.  Select higher quality dog food and make sure to read the labels to avoid by-products, fillers, and artificial ingredients.  (Do the same for your own food please.)
  • Quality medical care can help- proper vaccinations and early diagnosis of disease are just two reasons why you should make sure your dog visits their vet regulary.
  • Smaller breeds generally live longer than bigger breeds- this is clearly indicated in the expectancy data.
  • Similar to humans, female dogs are expected to live a year or two more than males.
  • Spaying or neutering your dog also contributes to a longer life span, specifically as it relates to a reduced risk of cancer and diseases associated with the sex organs.
