Dog DNA Follow-up

Last Monday we introduced a new member of the SlimDoggy family, Pepper. We challenged you to guess his lineage and we received many guesses, but none were entirely correct. Here’s Pepper’s brother who looks pretty similar, but does have an interesting characteristic that might have been a good clue.

Pepper had the Wisdom DNA test run and here’s his results:

Many of you guessed parts of his background: German Shepherd, Boxer were both mentioned. But, the majority of guesses were for Vizsla and Rhodesian Ridgeback. Nobody picked up on the Rottweiler, American Eskimo Dog or Schipperke.

Here’s a more extensive view of the lineage – this is kind of cool as it give the hypothetical pairings.

So how do we pick the winner of our little contest? No one had more than one right guess, but Lindsay from That Mutt was the only one who guessed German Shepherd and she also guessed Husky – which I think is pretty close to American Eskimo dog, so we’re awarding our SlimDoggy hat and bandana to Lindsay. Congratulations Lindsay!

  1. This was really interesting thread about – you should do more of these!

    • Sorry – I meant to write – really interesting contest !

  2. I think it’s so much fun to guess a dog’s breeds! Pepper’s results are really interesting! I can easily see the boxer in him now.

  3. Fascinating! This is why I tend to not wholly believe shelters when they guess at the breed of their adoptable dogs 🙂

    • That’s what it is – a guess…but it’s fun to do!

  7. Congrats to Lindsay! Good guess … I was way off with my Ridgeback guess. I really love the wisdom panel for those hard to define dogs. My girlfriend had a dog and no one could figure out what she was. It was alot of fun getting the results of the tests back and finally knowing what her lineage was. Fun post … enjoyed it!

    • Yeah – he was a tough one, plus he’s still a puppy, so that might have made it harder. We’ll see when he grows up.

  16. Very cool! I wouldn’t have guessed on the breed at all. I usually say German Shepherd when a dog has the brown and black features in the face, but I wouldn’t have come close to that here. The wrinkles remind me of a Rotteweiler, but I wouldn’t have named that breed without some prompting. I’m terrible at those guesses.

So this is your dog? I’m so behind on blog reading!

  18. That was fun! I had to go back and look at what I guessed, because I couldn’t remember…and I couldn’t have been further off! LOL. Congrats to Lindsay. The eyes definitely remind me of husky, I wonder if American Eskimo dogs have those distinctive eyes too (I’ll have to go look at Ruckus’ eyes). Anyway, he is quite the combo and I like that they were able to get five of the breeds (Luke’s lineage was so mixed they could only get 3).

    • Yeah five is good. When I did it on Tino many years ago, they only got two.

  23. We demand a genetic recount! I guess Pepper must have picked up his coloring from the boxer side of the family.

  24. That is so interesting. Do they give statistics on how accurate they are? I would love to find out Sampson’s background.

Either way, that is a very cute puppy!
