Celery ?!?

We have several farms in our neighborhood that grow different crops at different times of the year. The one right at the end of our street usually grows hot red peppers (I think they are ‘Fresno’ Peppers), but this spring they planted something different. For awhile I thought it was parsley as it was very leafy and didn’t seem to be bearing any ‘fruit’. Turns out it’s celery! They started picking it about 2 weeks ago  and it’s very slow going. They have a machine where it’s captured, put I think the chopping is done by hand. Since they are almost done, we figured we better hurry up and take some pictures so for our Tasty Tuesday post, here’s the celery harvest:

The field of celery. It’s probably about 1.5 – 2 feet tall.

Here’s how the stalks look when they are in the ground.

We picked a few stalks and brought them home to see if Jack & Maggie would like it.

Played around with that cool PicMonkey photo editor and did this nice collage of celery: farm-to-table.

But the real test – the dogs – Jack went for it, kind of shredded it, and then spit it out and walked away.

Maggie thought she would check it out.

And decided that she liked it, scampered over to the grass to settle in for a snack.

But at the end of the day…the poor celery was rejected and left to blend in with the grass. I bet if I stuffed it with peanut butter they would eat it!

  1. Oh goodness…I have to say that it does not look all that tasty to me but I am not big on veggies (a bit too healthy), my sister Katie might enjoy a celery stick, she loves veggies…I bet the fresh ones are much better than what mom buys at the store! Pretty cool seeing all that celery in the field!

  2. Brooks would eat celery, lettuce, broccoli, you name it. Kelly will do anything to avoid her greens!

  3. I agree, I think adding peanut butter would have resulted in zero left behind in the yard!

  4. Celery can be a little bitter. My dogs would probably lick the peanut butter out. But thanks for reminding me that I need to buy celery!

  5. I’ve never seen a celery field before…stuffing it with PB is a good idea…and maybe cutting it bitesize

    • Yeah – I don’t know Jack gets licks of peanut butter, but only a little – i’ll see if it will work.

  6. That is cool to see the whole field of celery, something I don’t think they grow around here. I love it myself, but our dogs don’t like it either. Kobi will eat just about any veggie, but he also rejects celery. I think the peanut butter is a good idea, or maybe even cream cheese? But as Flea said, they might just lick it out!

    • The field was really pretty – really green and lush. We are fortunate that they grow all sorts of things in our valley – some farms even grow fresh flowers for the market. Now that’s really pretty. The peanut butter and cream cheese kind of negates the value of the vegetable 🙁

      • So true….kind of liking putting cheese sauce on broccoli. Which I don’t do (anymore)!

        • Mmmmm, all the good things are now bad 🙁

      • You know, I was thinking you could put a bit in and freeze them-like a kong you don’t have to wash!

  8. Oh cool! Celery doesn’t grow here so I’ve never seen what it looks like at the farm. I don’t think my girls would eat it either.

  9. 🙂 Jasmine wouldn’t touch celery on its own like this. But she ate it when I blended it (raw) in her food.

  10. Shiner does the same thing with greens usually. She likes to munch and chew on it but then will spit it out leaving a mess behind.
