vital essentials logoOn January 15, 2016, the Carnivore Meat Company announced that it is recalling a select lot of Carnivore Vital Essentials Frozen Chicken Patties Entrée for Dogs because they have tested positive for Salmonella in a July 2015 FDA sample collection initiative. It is not clear why it took six months from the sample test date to announce this recall.  We will post an update when we learn of the reason.

**Update- we heard from Vital Essentials on the timing.  Here is the company’s explanation on why there was a ‘delay’:

The CVM issued a mass collection of more than 2000 frozen, freeze-dried and dehydrated pet foods on June 3, 2015.  This collection period, originally slated for completion in August,  was extended through the end of 2015.  Our product was collected at the end of the year, then tested.  FDA notified us of the results and we took immediate action.  This particular product was manufactured in October 2015, so it would not have been available to collect in June.

We have included the link to the CVM issuance as a reference

This is the second recall by Carnivore Meat in the past year.  The last recall, in July of 2015, was due to Listeria.

The Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) selected and tested product as part of a national collection initiative, which was issued by the Center of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) on June 3, 2015. The FDA notified Carnivore Meat Company that one of the samples collected, tested positive for Salmonella, bacteria commonly associated with fresh and frozen poultry, in human and in pet products.

The recalled lot is:

Vital Essentials Frozen Chicken Patties Entrée for Dogs, Net wt. 6 lbs.

UPC 33211 00807, Lot # 11475, Best by date 20161108 (11/08/16)

The affected product was distributed only in CA, FL, GA, RI, TX and WA.

According to the FDA announcement, “Healthy cats and dogs rarely become sick from Listeria monocytogenes. In humans, however, Listeria is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.”

Consumers who have purchased a recalled product are instructed contact the Company for refund instructions.  Consumers who have opened packages of the recalled food should throw the product away in a covered trash container. Consumers with questions can contact Vital Essentials at 920-370-6542 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. CST Monday through Friday.
