This is a picture of my brother’s dog from many years ago. Her name was Serene. She looks the part doesn’t she? She was the most beautiful dog – a cross between a border collie and a golden retriever – or at least that’s what she looked like. She was as smart as a whip and as sweet as could be. She had two litters of puppies – back in those day (1970’s) dogs roamed much more – and Serene attracted quite a following, if you know what I mean. My brother lived in Washington DC – attending Catholic University – his neighborhood was all college students, and most of Serene’s puppies went to his neighbors. It was like a small town, ruled by Queen Serene. He used to tell a story of the time one of her pups, named Radar, got hit by a car during the day – everyone in the neighborhood was at school so there was no one around to help. Serene dragged Radar up onto their porch and laid with him and kept him warm until Jim came home. Thanks to her, he survived.

My brother passed away a few years ago and I miss him terribly. Looking at pictures of his beloved dogs and sharing a bit of their stories brings him close again.

  1. What an awesome name for a wonderful dog. It is perfect for her. Great story about her saving Radar. Heck yes, things were so different back in the day! I shudder to think of the things we took for granted then.

  2. Thanks for the memory….

  3. She is lovely. You know, Jeffie is a Golden Ret / Border Collie cross and “serene” would fit him well, too.

  4. What a cool photo and a wonderful mommy dog. Sorry to hear about your brother but you have great memories. My mom is the only one of any family members we know that is an animal person…wonder why that is? She wishes other family had her love for pets but no one does.

  5. Isn’t it amazing how dogs elicit such beautiful memories?

  6. Yes, back in the 70’s no one ever spayed/neutered. It was pretty unheard of back then!

So sorry that you lost your brother.

I am so sorry for the loss of your brother. Losing a family member is such a hard thing to go through, parents or siblings. 🙁

  15. Thanks for the pic and the memories of Otis St. Pretty sure that, to Jim, no other dog could ever measure up to Serene. He is missed every day.

For some reason the comment box wouldn’t load for me on your Monday Mischief post. I will just comment here that I think the info graphic sounds great and hope you get a lot of entries. 🙂
