Are You Feeding Your Dog Sardines?
I read this piece on Dogster by Julia Szabo about feeding your dog sardines. You can read the full story here:
The author points out that sardines make a great addition to your dog’s meals. She suggests 1 sardine for every 20 lbs. that your dog weighs. Each sardine contains about 25 kcals and 175 mg of Omega-3 fats.
Heath Benefits of Sardines
Fish is a low calorie source of both high quality protein and omega-3 fats. Like with humans, there are many health benefits associated with eating fish including:
– reduced inflammation
– improved immune system
– supports a healthy cardiovascular system
– supports a healthy skin and coat
If you do decide to incorporate sardines into your dog’s diet, do as Julia suggests (and I agree) and stick with the water packed ones.
Cost of Sardines
I did a check on the price of Sardines and found that you can buy a 3.75 Oz can of water packed sardines for $1.09 at a major grocery chain. One can contains about 185 kcals and thus, about 7-8 pieces per can. Thus, sardines are fairly affordable and a bargain if you consider the health benefits that are contained in the product.
